Fort Lauderdale Fishing April 2011

Friday May 13th, 2011
April 1
Well Dennis and Richard were no “April Fools” by charter fishing Fort Lauderdale. We mostly trolled today and banged out 5 nice kingfish and missed plenty more more. We also caught one nice blackfin tuna and 3 bonitas, lots of action for just two guys.

April 2
The bonita blitz was on today for Scott, Danielle, Alex and Howard from Chicago. Everyone was new to the sport and couldn’t believe the strength and speed of these great gamefish. I believe we ended up with 8 or 10 along with a couple of king fish.

April 3
Yo Adrian, today we had big Rocky and Lucy from New York who had their hands full of rods and fish all day on their Fort Lauderdale fishing charter. The king fish and bonitas were SNAPPIN. As fast as we could get baits in the water we were getting bites. Im glad you guys had such a great day.
In the afternoon Mike, TJ and Chris from Boston pulled out a nice wahoo, half a dozen king fish and 4 bonitas on their fort Lauderdale fishing adventure.

April 3
Well the king fish and bonitas slowed down and it was a tough go for Mike, Austin, Joel and Paul on their fishing nice kings. So with it getting late in the trip we settled for some tasty tilefish. I believe we got almost a dozen, plenty to make a fine meal, along with a couple of nice snapper to boot.
The afternoon was a whole different ballgame. Robert, Brandon, Kim, Ramona and Chris crushed the fish on their afternoon sportfishing trip. We trolled South and pulled off a huge 35 pound kingfish at the boat. But that was ok because a mile later we caught a 50#er that made in the box on ice. A tight turn later we had a rare treat on the troll with a nice mutton snapper on one of the deep lines. We picked at four kings on the way to a grouper spot and pulled out a nice one and then caught a bonita on the way home. What a great afternoon.

April 4th
Its only getting better! Darryl, Rebecca, Lisa, jerry and Robert all from Maine, banged up the mahi with an even dozen all nice ones. We found a pallet floating in about 600 feet of water that was just loaded with bait and fish. We caught a few on the troll but pulled the rest out on light spinning gear. We also found five nice kings and 5 bonitas.

April 6
Mark, Scotty, Rich and Matt got their mahi on today with ten nice ones. You’ve got to love the mahi mahi or dolphin or whatever you want to call them. When they are there they are aggressive eaters, beautiful and down right tasty on the table. Great Job Guys!!

April 8th
Sport fishing ft lauderdale with us today was Jerry, Dominica, Frank and Fred from New York. The fish were again mahi mahi we only got three this morning but they were all nice ones. In the afternoon Paul, Bruce and Greg from North Carolina caught five nice mahi and a blackfin tuna, great way to end the day.

April 11
Daniel, Michelle, Charity and Liz from Fort Lauderdale caught some kingfish and bonitas along with a few snappers.
April 12
Fishing Fort Lauderdale all the way from New York was James, Nona, Kevin and Mark, who all had a great experience. With beautiful weather we fished north today with the mild wind and waves at our back. Three nice mahi mahi joined us in the boat along with a couple of kings and a giant trophy barracuda.
April 14
Peter and Ed had their hands full today fishing Fort Lauderdale. We trolled just long enough to catch two nice king fish, only to cut them into big shark baits. Once the baits were deployed it did not take long for the bite from the 8 foot monster but it did take the boys almost the remainder of the trip to reel it in. But what a nice fish.

April 15th
IRON MAIDEN fans from the great white north Marty and Kevin, braved huge hangovers and small seas to fish Fort Lauderdale. Huge fans with the tattoos and stories to prove they follow the band all over the world. Fishing was great with a load of bonitas and a few kings.
April 16th
Tony and Ann from the great state of Texas pulled out huge Sailfish from our Fort Lauderdale waters for some great photos before release. They also caught a handful of bonitas for icing on the cake.
April 19th
Fishing was a little slow today for Tony and Johanna with just one kingfish and 2 bonitas. Boy we sure tried though. We trolled dropped and even did some live baiting, sometimes you just cant win.

April 21st
Ah yes, one of my favorite customers and good friend Buffalo Bill brought his extremely well behaved and good mannered children fishing. We started at the “bait hole” and caught a couple pinfish and a couple of jack crevelle.
Our day was already made, the kids were having a blast. We ran straight to a wreck I knew was holding some amberjacks and started dropping. First up was Miss Elle who by the way caught a 50 # amberjack all by herself with just a little help, next Billy caught a big jack, then it was Madman Charlie with a huge jack and last but not least John caught a nice one as well. It’s a great day when four kids catch four fish as big or bigger than they are. What a great day!

April 23rd
Carlos and Antonio from Miami had a great day sport fishing Fort Lauderdale when they hauled in a huge 90 inch sailfish, a wahoo, 2 bonitas a blackfin tuna and 1 king fish.

April 26th
Good repeat customer Mike, Brian, Matt and Sarah busted up the mahi mahi in about 500 feet of water. We caught them on the troll, on the spinners and on whatever we could get in the water, for a total of thirty. Incredible day guys.

April 29th
Mark, John, Frank, Ron and Stephen from the Fort Lauderdale area rounded out the month with 6 bonitas, 2 tunas, 2 mahi and one 50 “ amberjack. Great day.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing March 7-28

Friday May 13th, 2011

March 7
Great friends Phil, his son Kyle Uncle Mike and Uncle Mike 2 a.k.a. Cooter from Fort Myers joined us for an incredible day of Ft. Lauderdale Fishing. Our plan was to troll South pick at the kings and bonitas, drop on the wrecks and then look for some mahi mahi offshore. Well the first 2 minutes of putting the baits out we had a giant sailfish up in the spread. My deckhand Richie did an incredible job of teasing the fish to the transom never letting him get “stung” as I hustled off the bridge and pitch baited the fish on 20# spin gear with a live goggle eye, ensuring a great hook up. Thank god we did not have a full spread out because we were getting dumped quick, I ran back up on the bridge and started coming back hard in reverse to chase after the giant sailfish. Cooter or Uncle Mike 2 is an accomplished angler and was put to the task of reeling in the beast. Well it was over an hour before we landed the fish a whopping 97 inches and weighing in around 90 #’s. It was one of the largest Atlantic Sailfish I’ve captured. Unfortunately it did not survive the fight but it didn’t go to waste. Everyone was ecstatic and we put the lines back out and continued with our plan. We caught one bonita and one king fish on the way to the wrecks and then switched gears and prepared to drop on the 230 ft wreck below us. Once ready we dropped and we were rewarded with an “insta-bite”. Kyle hopped in the chair to take some abuse from a giant amberjack. After releasing that jack we tried again and got hooked up. Kyle reeled up this one too got some pictures and let it go. We were then headed offshore to round up some Mahi Mahi. The mahi mahi were a little elusive but we managed to find two for dinner. On the way back to the reef we encountered a giant school of pilot whales, which rode our bow wake for a good 10 or 15 minutes. That was a nice treat. We put out a spread of live speedos we caught at the buoy in the morning and banged out a couple big kings reel quick. Great Day guys. Oh and Uncle Mike got his usual shark he catches every trip.

March 8
Alan, Rich and David from Texas joined their friends Clive and Peter from Parkland Florida on the Local Knowledge for some great king fishing off Fort Lauderdale. The trip was non stop action on the troll with everyone on board catching their limit of kings.

March 9
Today was a Great Day of Fishing Fort Lauderdale. Chris, Cory and Lisa the hometown heros had lady luck on their side with, count em, not one but TWO sailfish, five nice mahi mahi, 2 kings and 2 bonitas. Guys way to go!!!
March 11
Hoppie, Mark and Jay from Georgia absolutely crushed the big kings and bonitas today with non stop action on the troll, great Day!!
March 12
Today “Big Daddy” from the world famous Bahia Cabana brought Casey, Laura and Walleye Mike for what turned out to be another great day of big kingfish and one nice mahi mahi. Note to self never play cards with someone named after a street and be wary of fishing with ANYONE with a fish for a nick name. Mike you were great cant wait to do it again.

March 14
Alan and Jenny from Georgia, Doug from Michigan and Daniel and Lynn from Florida had a great day of Fishing Fort Lauderdale. And Ive got to say its nice when the people are great, the weather is great and so is the fishing, which is how the whole month has been so far. Everyone wanted some good eating fish so we headed straight off shore and rounded up three nice gaffer mahi, slid back on the reef for four nice kings and a huge Spanish mackerel. See you guys soon.
March 15
A full boat of people and a full box of fish sure makes for happy captains, crews and customers. Fishing with us today were Tom, Nick, Tim and Jim from Illinois . The kingfish continued to devour every bait we put in the water along with a couple of big barracudas. With a limit of kings there was no complaints.

In the afternoon Jamie, Mike and Ryan only caught three fish but they were real nice ones. We kite kite fished all morning in hopes of some sailfish and mahi action and while the sailfish eluded us the big mahi did not. Mike and Ryan each caught a 20 pound monster mahi and Jamie caught a pretty nice shark. So while we didn’t get quantity we did get quality. Nice way to end the day.

March 17
My “Big Brother” from my fraternity whom I haven’t seen since ’93 chartered the boat with his father in law and two sons Tyler and Dylon. The fishing has been so great the whole month why not today. Because this trip was so important to me and the fish gods knew it. They have a tendency to slow or stop fishing for great friends and family and today was no exception. We tried everything, trolling, sharkfishing, kite fishing and thank god wreck fishing. Tyler the birthday boy muscled in a huge 50-60 pound amberjack. Sorry it wasn’t better guys but my gosh we tried.

March 20
Darren and Dave from Fort Pierce and Cleveland banged out a box of nice king fish and a couple bonitas for a decent day of fishing fort Lauderdale.

March 25
Charter fishing Ft Lauderdale with us today was Astor, Mark, Bill, Henry and Fernando. With eating fish on the brain our guys wanted snapper and grouper, the problem, season doesn’t open till April 1st. The solution, Tilefish. Not many people know about these incredible tasting deep water fish. While they don’t get huge what they lack in size they make up in flavor. We hit a couple of spots and put about 10 in the box, oh yeah, we also put four nice kings in the box as well. No one went hungry.

March 26
Arthur, Tom, Billy, Darren and Paul are all great repeat customers from right here in Fort Lauderdale. I gotta tell ya every time these guys come out it’s a blast. Feels more like hanging out than work. So while we were just hanging out we caught 7 kingfish and some tilefish. Great day guys see you soon.

March 28
Another great group of guys from fort Lauderdale that fish with me all the time came out today Paul and Mike. They had quite the morning with 6 blackfin tunas, 2 bonitas and 6 king fish. Nice day guys thank you again we appreciate your business.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing February 2011

Tuesday February 15th, 2011

Hi everyone, Capt. Mike here ready to update my readers on what’s been going on in Feb. Guys, we’ve had some real good days so far this month and we’ve had some real poor ones as well. What’s weird about this month is some of the best looking days as far as conditions ended up being some of the slow days, it made no sense at all. We would have beautiful blue water, good north current and bait in the area and little to no fish. A few days later the water was dirty, we had south current and there was weed every where and the fish were snapping. Just when you think you’ve got all the answers the fish change it up on ya. Good news, even on the slow days we still pulled some great fish out. When its slow we try everything trolling, dropping, live baiting and so on. Sometimes we go for the “Go Big or Go Home” theory and it paid off for us on multiple occassions so far this month. Nothing wrong with taking quality over quantity. I’ll take one sailfish or one big shark over a bunch of snappers anyday, unless thats what YOU want to catch. Let me know when we go. Along with sailfish and sharks this month, we are seeing huge numbers of blackfin tunas there not giants but good size footballs. We are still waiting on the kingfish to show up and the amberjacks are starting to turn on as well. Check out my blog page for specefic catches and who made them. You can follow us on Facebook and Twitter here in a couple days, look for real time updates and reports.

January Fishing 2011

Wednesday January 12th, 2011

January fishing in Fort Lauderdale is exactly like December’s fishing only better. Lots and lots of sailfish continue to pour down the Gold Coast in search of bait, warmer water and prime breeding grounds off of Mexico’s Yucatan Coast. Hoards of mahi mahi also begin making a strong showing this month and unlike the schoolies we see farther offshore in the summertime, winter mahis run large often taking larger live baits intended for sailfish. Mahi Mahi seem to average in the 15 to 30 puond range this time of year, they put up a great fight and are incredible on the table as well. Big smoker kingfish will also begin crashing baits this month with plenty of snake kings as well. Big Hammerhead sharks begin to trickle through this month as well consuming big slab baits on top as well as fished on bottom. When conditions are right we fish for all these species at once so you never know whats going to bite next!

Great December Sailfishing

Tuesday December 21st, 2010

December signals the official start of the Fort Lauderdale Sail fishing season! Cold fronts are pushing hoards of baitfish on their yearly southern migration and right on their tails are one of the most prized sport fish that swims anywhere in the world, the Sailfish. Sailfish are anywhere from 5-8 feet long and are colored with amazing blues, purples, silver and bronze. Sailfish are known for their incredible speed and acrobatic ability. They typically strip hundreds of yards of line from your reel while shredding the oceans surface. Live goggle eyes suspended from kites or live ballyhoo pulled from the outriggers are the preferred methods of capturing these magnificent fish. At the side of the boat once exhausted from the battle get your picture quick before releasing them to fight another day. In between sailfish bites enjoy numerous mahi mahi bites from large pairs or groups of fish. They run much larger in the winter time averaging 10-30 pounds as opposed to the “schoolies” we catch in the summertime. Wahoo, also make a strong showing this month, known for their incredible speed and their table quality, they are one of my favorites. Big smoker kingfish are also showing up along with some bonito.

November Fishing Fort Lauderdale

Thursday November 18th, 2010

If November’s fishing is anything like October it’s going to be great. October brought two cold fronts and lots of sailfish along with some big mahi mahi. Most of the sails and mahi were caught kite fishing with goggle eyes or slow trolling live bally hoos. Fish were found from 80 feet of water all the way out to 400 feet or better. While the fish were spread out bites were coming in multiples. Double headers were common. November is shaping up the same way. Lots of sailfish and quite a few big wahoos around to compliment the gaffer size mahi’s that have been showing up in force. We look for clean blue water, cold or cool wind somewhere out of the north and goos north current. When all these variables line up look out, its on!!

Fort Lauderdale Sailfishing in October

Monday September 27th, 2010

October is right around the corner as September draws to a close for us. I couldnt be happier business begins to pick back up and fishing just gets better. The fall mullet run is in full force along with sardines and ballyhoos. Following closely is the mighty sailfish. 8 feet of blistering fury, 60 miles an hour of screaming purple and blue, shredding and tearing the cobalt ocean apart while trying to rid your hook. I am patiently waiting the first cold front of the year in October which signals the sailfish its time. Most of the year we prefer kite fishing for sailfish, but as the season opens I prefer to slow troll live ballyhoo. The sailfish are not concentrated in any one depth and can be found from 70 feet all the way out to 500 feet. So slow trolling allows me to cover more ground and find more fish. October books up quick every year so reserve your spot now so you can catch your sailfish. Bycatches will include some of the largest mahi mahi/dolphinfish of the year as they devour any thing in their path as they follow the massive bio mass of baitfish down our Fort Lauderdale coast.

Fish are Biting in Fort Lauderdale

Thursday June 17th, 2010

Fort Lauderdale Fishing is Great in June

June 1-16 2010

June’s fishing continues to heat up along with the weather. The dolphin fish or Mahi Mahi continue to show in good if not great numbers making for happy anglers and tummy’s alike. The green and gold demon of the deep has been making its presence known from the reef out to about 20 miles in over 1800 feet of water. Devouring everything in their sight, the mahi mahi make for pretty easy targets once found. Bonitas, while not good on the table are fantastic fighters and with test any anglers light tackle skills. The bohnita is an eager biter as well and multiple hook ups are not uncommom. Mixed in with the bonitas are medium and a few large blackfin tunas along with some skipjack tunas, both of which are good table fare. The kingfish are beginning to show up in great numbers. Many are “snakes” or smaller schooling fish in the 5-12 pound range but there are still plenty of smokers around as well. Bottom fishing is good; we’ve been catching good size and plenty of tilefish in the 400 foot range. Vermillion snappers are also biting good as well and June marks the month that the giant Warsaw groupers show up. There is no mistaking when one of these behemoths bites your bait. Sandbar and bull sharks also make a very strong showing this month so anglers and bathers beware!

May is for MaHi Mahi in Fort Lauderdale

Monday May 24th, 2010

May brings Mahi Mahi for Happy Anglers in Fort Lauderdale

As promised May’s fishing has been nothing short of spectacular. The fish on everyone’s agenda is the mahi mahi, the dorado, the dolphin fish or whatever you choose to call it, all I know is whatever name you use I think it just means delicious! This green and gold gamester travel in large schools when they are young 3-8 pounds, once they pass that mark and they are about 8-15 pounds they begin to travel in smaller packs and once 15-50 pounds they normally travel in pairs. The pairs normally consists of one big bull (male) fish and a large cow, sometimes another cow may be present. The mahi mahi is a great gamefish for several reasons, besides its table quality the mahi mahi is an eager biter, once you find the fish they are almost always willing to bite, they are beautiful with an array of green and yellows with some blues mixed in, they are great jumpers putting on some great aerial displays for your camera. Techniques for catching mahi mahi are pretty simple. The easiest is just to pull a couple of small top water lures made by soft head or some small feathers and look for birds, floating debris and weed lines. Once hooked keep one in the water to keep the school around while you catch its schoolmates on light spinning tackle with small chunks of ballyhoo or bonita. You can step it up by “Running and Gunning”, instead of fishing a lot of open clean water you can run or chug while looking for something like the before mentioned weed lines, floating debris and birds. Once found then deploy your baits and begin trolling. Yet another method is to find a weed line or rip and cut the engine, put out a chum bag and begin live chumming with small pilchards put a few on hooks and let them come to you. Keep your vhf radio on the local fishing channel and listen for the depth of fish being caught and concentrate your efforts there. Always have a larger live bait like a goggle, mullet or blue runner ready for when that big bull comes in the spread or swims up to the boat to see what’s going on. When fishing floating debris like boards or logs make sure you troll a deep bait on a planer or down rigger for wahoos that are almost always present.
