Mahi-mahi, also known as Dorado or dolphin fish (but they are not related to the mammal dolphins), is one of the fastest offshore game fish to catch and see in the ocean waters. Mahi-mahi is a beautifully colored fish: its sides are golden with iridescent greens and blues, and its belly is white and yellow. However, these colors can change rapidly – when hooked, these fish “light up” with almost neon colors and mahi-mahi often turn silvery over-all with blue spots on the flanks. Importantly, mahi-mahi are among one of the fastest growing fish (they spawn in warm ocean currents throughout much of the year).
Besides their beauty, wonderful colors, size, table quality and healthy population, mahi-mahi is a highly prized game fish for several reasons. Mahi-mahi fish are also known for their high-jumping, acrobatic features. They make long runs and will often leap out of the water, when you are battling them. Be assured, mahi-mahi fishing in Fort Lauderdale is an exceptional way to enjoy a fight that you will never forget.
As a rule, mahi-mahi fish tend to travel in large schools ranging up to 50 fish (mainly, young 3-8 pound species). When they are about 8-15 pounds, they begin to travel in smaller packs and once they pass the mark of 15-50 pounds, they normally travel in pairs. These pairs consist of one big male fish and a large female one. As these fish often swim near debris such as floating wood, palm trees and fronds, or Sargasso weed lines, where they can eat flying fish, squid and sea horses, Fort Lauderdale mahi-mahi fishing charters most often look for floating objects near the edge of the reef.
Techniques for catching mahi-mahi are pretty simple. First of all, we need to follow any ocean birds, especially if they are diving, this is a great sign that we will hook up with some dolphin fish. During our Ft Lauderdale fishing for mahi-mahi we will use one of the most efficient technique – trolling. To be successful in catching these fish, we’ll need 5-7 trolling rods in the water, rigged with ballyhoo or bonito strips on colorful skirts. Once hooked the school will follow the hooked fish to the boat, once the school is up we pith small live baits or cut baits on light spinning gear. It’s really cool to take part in Fort Lauderdale mahi-mahi fishing trips: you’ll be impressed by this acrobatic game fish displaying spectacular blue, yellow and green colors when being hooked.
Don’t worry if you are new to the world of big game fishing. There are no special skills or knowledge required to enjoy an exciting Ft Lauderdale fishing adventure aboard the “Local Knowledge”. We will provide you with everything needed to make your mahi-mahi fishing in Fort Lauderdale a unique and unforgettable experience.
