Fort Lauderdale Grouper Fishing

Posted in Fish

Warsaw Groupers have armor consisting of spikes on their dorsal fins and inside their gills. I was completely unaware of this in the days when I was a mate on a charter boat and I learnt this lesson the hard way. I will never forget the first Warsaw Grouper that I caught. I reached under his gills to hold him up for a picture and he slammed his gill plates tightly on my hands, smashing them against his gill spikes. He literally shredded my hands and turned them into an awful mess!

What makes Grouper fishing in Fort Lauderdale so exhilarating?

All groupers are immensely powerful fish and they feed along the ocean floor. It is a mammoth task reeling them in from the depths and they will fight you all the way. Not only are they exceptionally tasty, but they are an abundant species of hungry predators that enjoy biting our bait.

What do Grouper look like?

It is very easy to identify these unique and interesting fish. They have short stocky bodies and huge mouths. They also have enormous tooth plates instead of teeth that are used for burrowing in thick mud and for crushing their prey most effectively.

How big are Grouper?

The various groupers grow to different sizes. We mostly catch Gag Grouper and Black Grouper weighing as much as 50lbs; while Red Groupers weigh between 10lbs and 15lbs and Snowy Groupers usually exceed 20lbs. Warsaw groupers can easily tip the scales at 100lbs.

Where do you find Grouper in Fort Lauderdale?

These amazing fish are found in both shallow and deep waters. We catch them in as little as 60ft of water right out to 500ft. They love hiding in underwater structures such as coral reefs, wrecks and rock piles.

What baits are used for Grouper?

Groupers have enormous appetites and will readily devour any bait we present to them. We usually use live baits, but they can be caught easily on cut baits and bait/lure combinations as well.

What tackle is used to catch Grouper?

We use heavier tackle in the 50lb-100lb test range. These fish have a habit of breaking lines on rocks and other structures and they are very strong, so heavier tackle is highly recommended.

What methods are used to catch Grouper?

These bottom feeders need to have bait presented where they hunt. This is why we usually use a sinker to drop our baits within a foot or two of the ocean floor. You can actually feel them gulp your bait and then we keep our lines tight and pull them from their homes, trying to prevent them wrapping our lines or breaking them on the edges of structure in the process.
